Q&A with Sara Zeigler of Mrs Zigs Painting

Q: How did you become a licensed artis for Big “Daddy” Roth?
A: It was actually really awesome. Definitely a dream come true. I took part in the Rockabilly Riot at the Nugget Casino Resort in Sparks, NV. Some guys asked if I was a licensed artist for Rat Fink and I kind of got scared. I thought I was in trouble for painting. Nope, they texted Eileen Roth some of my work and bing, bang, boom, I became a licensed artist.

Q: So you provide a licensing fee to the company?
A: Yeah, unfortunately, she does require a percentage. But that’s okay. You know, that’s better than okay. That’s like, yeah, really cool. It doesn’t hurt you know what I mean? It’s really, really cool. And I enjoy being licensed under Eileen Roth for sure.

Q: How did Rat Fink become a big thing for you?
A: Um, you know, I’ve always been a fan. It really came together during Hot August Nights here in Reno. The hot rod vibe the event contains is a lot of Lowbrow art that I really like.

Q: Tell me about your art, what’s your style?
A: I have two markets. One is the Lowbrow art style. And the other is naturalism for pet portraits.

Q: So can you talk about what your creative process is when developing a piece of art?
A: Um, honestly you know, I like to get stoned. I also like to drink some coffee, put on some good music and just let it go. Let it flow.

Q: Okay, so tell me about how cannabis and art work together?
A: Um, for me, it just kind of opens up differently. You’re mellow and you’re calm, you’re able to think outside the box and sit and really like, let those, you know, creative juices flow. I don’t know. It puts me in a pleasant state of mind where I’m able to just dive right into my art. You know, see what happens.

Q: How about themes and subjects that you consistently appear in your work?
A: MMMM, I am obsessed with the little hot stuff devil. For some reason, he gets in the paintings a lot. I just think he’s adorable. I even have him tattooed on me, so I don’t know what it is about him. Um geez, I try not to paint the same stuff over and over, but I definitely do. Yeah, and I just like painting hot girls, you know.

Q: So tell me about why you like to paint hot girls?
A: Um, they’re fun. I think it’s fun to paint.

Q: I would have thought you would paint hot guys so you can sell more to the girls.
A: Yeah, I can’t paint guys, for some reason, I make them look like girls. I think it brings out the little girl in me, it’s just like putting makeup on someone. It’s fun. Like when I do girls faces, I get to put makeup on them and do all that stuff. I don’t know. I just don’t know what it is.

Q: So talk to me about what you’re going to provide for the Flying Piston Benefit?
A: I did create a lot of sketches and then I completely went different directions. So again, that was fun.

Q: Oh, um, are you wanting to know like what I painted?
A: Yes.

Q: What did you paint?
A: This one is fun. It’s unique. It’s Rat Fink and he’s riding a motorcycle. He’s got a devil in his ear.  And it is telling him positive and negative things, that’s what devils do. And also one on the forks. Then we’ve got an Rat Fink getting sucked up by you UFO in the background. It’s amazing!

Q: So do you find that your art tells you what to do?
A: You know, it’s super weird that you asked because sometimes I can stare at a blank canvas and see where I’m going to make the lines and what I’m going to draw and how I’m going to draw it just by staring at the canvas. So it goes from there. Maybe that has something to do with the weed, though, I’m not sure.

Q: How did you get into art?
A: I’ve never not been into art. Back in eighth grade, my art teacher submitted my work for a competition for the governor’s mansion. And I won. It was really fun. The rest, as they say, is history. I’m able to do it full time right now. To see Sara’s Instagram page @mrs.zigs_paintings, click here.
